Yellow in Interior

Yellow Color In Interior

“How lovely yellow is! It stands for the sun.”

-Vincent Van Gogh, Holland Painter

As we all know yellow is one of the three primary colors. It is a warm, joyful, youthful, and vibrant color, which reminds us of blissful summer days. It is a color full of optimism that can energize and cheer up anyone’s gloomy mood. Yellow is said to stimulate concentration, memory, energy, and metabolism.

In view of the fact that yellow is an easy to live with color practically any room can be painted in various values of the yellow hue. It is an ideal color for kitchens, dining rooms, living rooms, kids’ rooms, family rooms, and dark halls. As a color which stimulates mind and body it is widely used in study and play rooms.

Although, yellow is an uplifting and welcoming color it is wise to use it with caution, to not overdo it, as it could be overwhelming if used in it’s pure form. Extreme genuine yellow in large amounts is almost irritating and uncomfortable. Therefore, it is not advised to use strong hues in adult or kids’ bedrooms. As an alternative use light yellow hues, as it creates a warm, relaxing, calm, yet fresh atmosphere. Otherwise, if you are determined to use an intense yellow hue to brighten up and enliven the room, use it in smaller amounts as an accent color, rather than a dominant one. A further suggestion to soften and thin the intensity of a bright yellow room is to add white details like furniture, baseboards, shelves, and curtains.

In decorating keep in mind that pure yellow hues advance and dominate, making the room appear smaller, whereas lighter and more pale tints of yellow will recede reflecting more light, thus visually making a room appear larger, airy and lighter. Knowing this basic rule of color effect will allow you to make a large room appear more intimate, or bring more light to a dark hall or loft.

Because the color yellow creates a warm and joyful atmosphere, use it liberally in colder and grayer climates or in rooms with north facing windows. However, yellow can be used in sunny rooms as well, except here it will benefit from cool color accents, creating a balanced interior.

Yellow, Orange, and Green

Yellow, Orange and Green are three adjacent colors on the color wheel. Therefore they create a harmonious color scheme. This bright and joyful combination of colors is a perfect choice for kids’ play or study rooms, as it stimulates brain function and energy. Meanwhile light cream painted walls will significantly thin the bright hues leaving this a happy and cheerful room, yet calm enough for a bedroom.

Yellow and Browns

Soft yellow colors, in combination with different values of brown, create a calm, neutral and welcoming atmosphere. Dark brown furniture and flooring makes this creamy yellow color appear light and fresh. Although yellow and brown create a rich and luxurious look, it is advisable to always remember that dark warm colors advance making any room look smaller and more intimate. Adding a plant and a piece of art in green hues creates interest, depth and contrast to this traditional room.

Yellow and Blues

Yellow and blue is a very popular and classic color choice. This color scheme creates a very balanced contrasting interior as these colors lie opposite each other on the color wheel. Yellow interiors can appear too warm and sunny; however the introduction of a cold blue or purple color gives a very comforting and dramatic look to a room. Keep in mind though, that the most striking yellow-blue interiors are created when both colors are used of the same value or intensity.

Yellow, Red and Green

Yellow and green when used together create a very refreshing, tranquil atmosphere. Nature gives us a lot of yellow and green suggestions. If you would like to add a bit of excitement to a room, then try adding red or terracotta as an accent color. Either will do the job and give an impressive, finished look to any interior.

Interior Design Trend Fall-Winter 2010/11

Interior Design
Color Trend Fall-Winter 2010/11

The color trend for interior this year reveals a significant range of color from classic warm fall colors to mystifying cool colors of marine. The strong need in expressing ones' individuality is very evident in interior now, thus resulting in many surprising color groupings.
Fall – Winter 2010/2011 interiors are expressed in five main color themes: Genuine, Vivid, Pure, Misty, and Timeless.

Genuine

The pure beauty of warm fall days, bitter-sweet scents of spice, the aroma of hot cocoa, and the splendor of yellow and orange leaves on the ground. This nature inspired color scheme is still one of the most popular and highly used by interior professionals this season.

Everything in this scheme is genuine and organic from colors to materials and textures. The combination of rough and smooth textures represents the luxury of nature through: leather, natural wool and silks, wood, bronze, copper, iron, granite and mineral textures, clay pottery, uneven glass, stone tiles, and bricks.

Vivid

A daring and dramatic color scheme. Everything is full of movement and positive energy in this interior. The maroon color gives it an unexpected twist and charisma which enlivens and adds personality to an interior.

The combination of unexpected textures and materials go along with the scheme. Silky smooth fabrics and glossy tile against rough coatings, grainy wood, textured carpets and rugs - all complement this intriguing style.

Pure

Mesmerizing, joyful and authentic. This color scheme is inspired by the deep Mediterranean blues and warm colors of Moroccan villas. The sophistication and richness of this color scheme will fill an interior with passion and allure.

This color scheme works best with rough, matte, uneven textures and materials. Think one of-a-kind handcrafted aged furniture, wrought iron work, painted wood floors, and Saltillo tile.

Misty

This lagoon inspired color scheme is fresh and inspirational. These vibrant and spirited colors will bring movement and liveliness to any interior.

The contrast of matte and glossy materials and finishes enhance this color scheme by adding more chic and elegance. Consider using smooth genuine or fake leather, natural stone or glass tile, soft wool carpets, and polished wood flooring.

Timeless

Black and white - so predictable, straightforward, yet so elegant and ageless. This classic color scheme has been used widely in interiors throughout the ages, however this season it will be used to a great extent by interior designers.

The combination of soft to-the-touch and polished materials is the perfect match to this color scheme. The use of soft leather, smooth silky fabrics, polished marble surfaces, lacquered furniture, polished nickel light fixtures, silver accessories, and lustrous fur will add to the elegant and striking look of this interior color scheme.

Tips and Tricks of the Interior Design Trade - Window Treatments Overview

So many times we find ourselves wanting to change something in our interior, add something new, fresh, something that will make us happy and comfortable in our own house. Not all of us realize, though, that by adding just one detail we can completely transform the look of our home. One of those details dramatically adding to your interior is window treatments. Why is it that window treatments can be such an important element that could help us to achieve wholeness and harmony in our interior design? Why is it that window treatments can make us feel welcome and comfortable in our own house?

Any successful window treatment should achieve both decorative and functional roles in your interior design. First, let’s talk about the decorative role.

1. Style. The style of the window treatment you choose will greatly affect the harmony of your house. Think of the architectural style of your house, the style of your furnishings, window sizes, ceiling heights, the view from your windows. All of these components should be unified with the style of the window treatments. Window treatments need to complete your interior design, like the icing on a cake (it is good without the icing, but only with the icing will you get a complete look and taste). Place an elaborate and luxurious window treatment in a minimal contemporary room and you will welcome inconsistency and confusion to your house. But in contrast a neutral color and crisp draperies will be welcomed in a lavish style house.

2. Color. The color of your window treatments is a wonderful way to complement and balance your interior design in full. It can also make your room appear lighter or darker. When you consider window treatments for different rooms remember to keep a good flow, especially if your house has an open floor plan. When choosing the color for your window treatments always try to consider how it looks with the adjacent colors of your furnishings. Another significant factor in selecting the right color is to keep in mind the orientation, or direction the windows face. Does it face North or South, East or West?

3. Fabric. With such a great selection of fabric available nowadays how do you choose the right one for your window treatments? When considering the type of fabric for your window treatments first think of the style of your window treatments. Will your window treatment need to be gracefully draped or have a flat surface? Does your window treatment have a purpose to diffuse the light or block the light? Now think about the pattern. Whether it is solid, geometrical, floral, large or small scale, the pattern of the fabric you choose for your window treatments needs to create a sense of unity with the rest of the furnishings. Another consideration is budget. For window treatments like Roman shades or valances you can invest in a more luxurious fabric, as you do not need to worry about paying for yards and yards of fabric. With fabric you can also add texture to your room, and make it look more interesting. A balance of textures in the interior is necessary to achieving harmony. But, remember that it is always refreshing to have a good variety of textures.

4. Completeness. It is no secret that window treatments give a finished and complete look to the windows and whole interior. Without doubt there are windows that represent a work of art with the most outstanding view that you certainly do not want to cover. Unfortunately, this does not happen very often. The majority of the windows are plain and boring looking with a very ordinary view. By adding draperies to the windows, even if you already have hard blinds, you will make the windows look softer, complete, and more pleasing. If the window is an odd shape or size, an experienced professional will know how to visually transform your window into a proportional, balanced, and beautiful window by designing certain window treatments.

Now that we have mentioned some characteristics of the decorative role let’s look at the functional role of window treatments. There are a few very significant functional aspects that have to be considered prior to designing any soft window treatments.

1. Privacy. Privacy gives us a psychological sense of security and comfort. Our bedrooms and bathrooms are the rooms with the highest demand for privacy. During the day time it could be easily achieved by covering windows with sheers or any lightweight fabric. However, translucent window treatments will not do the job at night. Lined draperies or soft shades will provide privacy as needed.

2. Light control. The ability to control light is a major factor in selecting window treatments. If you bedroom needs to be completely darkened, especially during early mornings, certain blackout linings will make the window treatments much more opaque, while adding fullness to your window treatments. When light is desirable, consider filtering the glare with translucent shades or sheer curtains.

3. Energy consciousness. Heat gain during the summer months of hot climates, just like heat loss in the winter months of cold climates can cost us a lot of money. By installing lined and interlined window treatments that could be drawn together to prevent heat loss/gain, you can significantly reduce the cost of your electric and gas bills.

4. Protection from sun damage. Rooms that face south or west are exposed to a lot of sun light that can, over time, cause deterioration and fading of our furnishings and flooring materials. Lined draperies will not only protect the expensive fabric of the window treatments, it will also protect costly furnishings, and flooring from sun damage.

5. Noise insulation. Do you live on a busy street, or do you have loud neighbors? Installing layered or interlined window treatments can be very effective in achieving outside noise reduction.

Whatever your personal style is, the main purpose of decorating your house is to make it comfortable, tranquil and beautiful for your whole family to enjoy living in and sharing special times together.
